Antique c1900 hand crafted Arts and Crafts brooch with lively opals possibly by Mary Thew

Description A delightful and unique hand wrought silver brooch dating from the early 1900s, in a particularly eye-catching design. You can really get a sense of the work of the craftsperson in the flattened silver sections, which have been overlapped into a rather beautiful design. The lovely opals are very well-matched and they are so colourful in their flashes of reds, oranges, blues and greens-superb! I have seen this type of flattened-out ribbon work overlapped in similar designs in some pieces by Mary Thew (Glasgow Girls)  and she really is as close as I can get to an attribution. She used opals too, in quite a number of pieces. I have never before seen that silver vertical detail, which culminates in a ball but it does elevate the whole shape of the design. The opals are bezel set and the teardrop opals beautifully domed. It is a gorgeous piece of work and has its original fittings, including a safety chain. It would lend itself for conversion to a pendant, if you so desired. It measures approx 5cm in height by just under 3cm wide. In pleasing condition and ready to be loved.
